April 21, Schwerin, Germany: WBA regular supermiddle champ Karoly Balzsay retained his portion of the title with an impressive 12th round stoppage of stablemate Dimitri Sartison after an exciting, exellent fight between two fighters that knew each other well. Sartison was down early in the last round, got up right away and fought back but folded as Balzsay poured it on and referee Mikael Hook stopped the action at 2.25 with Dimitri taking a beating. It was announced that Balzsay ahead on points by a close margin – and many rounds were close but overall the Hungarian was the better boxer showing a compact defence while scoring hard, short punches from both hands. Sartison took some time to warm up and he may have been hampered by his knee injuries as Balzsay boxed well on the move finding a home for his southpaw jab and right hook. Balzsay have a history of fading in the later rounds but here he put it all together. Both men gave their all and both had their moments but Balzsay was the stronger man. Former WBO lightheavy camp Juergen Braehmer treated his fight against Vikapita Meroro as a sparring session and had while he did have the fight in his hands he couldn´t close it when he wanted to and it went to scorcards after ten. The judges had it 99-92, 98-92 and 97-92. Meroro was down in the fourth. Cruiser Rakhim Chakhkiev had it all too easy against Jaidon Covington, who seemed to cover up well against the ropes but caved in the moment Chakhiev got serious with his body shots. Covington went down and out at 1.56 of the first in a scheduled ten-rounder that was for the WBC Baltic title. Ex-WBA heavyweight champ Ruslan Chagaev looked sharp as he took out Billy Zumbrun with a southpaw left upercut at 1.16 of the third of a scheduled eight-rounder. Zumbrun got up but was soon on the floor again and his nose was in a bad shape after that upercut. Juan Carlos Gomez looked lucky to get a tko win over Darnell Wilson in the fourth of their eight-rounder. Gomez was on the floor in the third and it then seemed as if he clashed heads with the wild swinging American early in the fourth. A time out was called and the ringside doctor ruled out Wilson and the referee ruled that a legitimate punch had caused the cut which made Gomez the winner of a fight he had trouble winning Ante Bilic won the WBO European middleweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Rafael Bejaran. It was scored 118-109, 117-110 and 116-111. Bejaran was down in the second and hurt again in the ninth but Bilic had to pace himself and Bejaran, flashy but a poser, lasted the distance Marcel Meyerdiercks won the WBO I/C featherweight title with a clear win over Argentinian Santiago Allione after twelve. It was scored 118-110, 117-111 and 119-109 after a fastpaced, no knockdown affair.
