August 22, Budapest, Hungary:
German lightheavy Jurgen Brahmer won the WBO interim title with an eleventh round stoppage of previously unbeaten stablemate Aleksyi Kuziemski. Kuziemski started the fight well, got off first and pressed the action but late in the second – almost at the bell – Brahmer nailed him with a counter left and Aleksyi suffered a flash knockdown. He was also floored in the third and fifth. But after that Brahmer seemed to wait for the right moment and Kuziemski outworked his opponent in those middle rounds. Brahmer´s trainer, Michael Timm, instructed his fighter to pick up the pace and Brahmer was back in control in the ninth and tenth. In the eleventh Jurgen scored with a right upercut from his southpaw stance and a hard left. Kuziemsi went down again, was up fast looking wobbly and the towel came in from trainer Artur Grigorian at 0.39. The stoppage looked a bit premature but Kuziemski must have been far behind on points.
The “real” WBO champ, Zsolt Erdei, was ringside and can´t have been overly impressed with the interim ruler. Brahmer is a very skillful boxer / puncher but have late in his career developed a somewhat sloppy defence and gets caught much too often for comfort.
In Helsinki on this very same night heavyweights Jarno Rosberg and Juha Haapoja both scored points wins over selected opponents. Rosberg outscored Russian Daniil Peretyatko while Haapoja did the same to Portugese Humberto Evora. At jr welter Ville Piispanen beat Spaniard Sento Martinez over six while Jaakko Myllyla stopped Dutchman Richard Asare in the sixth. P 3 Boxing will later this fall match Happoja vs Rosberg and Myllyla vs Piispanen for the national titles. At cruiser Norwegian Ronni Tiller beat Latvian Jevginjs Stamburskis over four in a fight that looked close enough for a draw. Supermiddle Niko Jokinen beat Ruslans Pojnesevs over six.
