March 31, Kiel, Germany:King Arthur Abraham retained the WBO European title with a clear win over tricky and competent Pole Piotr Wilczewski in the headliner of Sauerland´s show at the Sparkassen Arena in front of 6000 cheering fans. After twelve the judges had it 118-109 twice and 119-108. Wilczewski had a point deducted in the seventh for turning around. Abraham looked as strong as ever and worked more in the early rounds than he has in the past. He was at time quiete impressive with his long bursts of heavy hooks from both hands. Wilczewski took everything coming his way and also made Abraham miss with a lot of punches. The former IBF middleweight champ couldn´t be denied though and was too strong for his brave opponent down the stretch. Abraham will face the winner of WBO champ Robert Stieglitz and his challenger George Groves – a fight that goes ahead May 5 in Erfurt on Sauerland´s next German show.In the show closer strong Polish cruiser Mateusz Masternak, now 26-0, floored tough Mexican Felipe Romero in the fourth and sixth rounds but took until 2.06 of the tenth and final round to stop him. Romero was spent force at the time of the stoppage but Masterkak took a long time to discover how little his opponent had left. EBU lightheavy champ Eduard Gutknecht looked lucky to retain the title on a split twelve round decison over better than expected Frenchman Tony Averlant. It was scored 115-113 and 114-113 for the German and 115-113 for the Frenchman. Averlant was floored late in the first from a left hook and lost the round on a two point margin on two cards – and this was a round he had won until the final punch came just at the bell. Tony was unsteady as he got up but ready to continue and after that he gradually took over the action in a messy, hardfought encounter where many rounds were difficult to scor. Averland looked like the winner at the end though.Supermiddle Henry Weber was another lucky winner as he beat Italian veteran Lorenzo Di Giacomo over eight. Weber is tougher than he looks but Di Giacomo appeared to outwork him in many rounds for a close win but the judges all had Weber winning.Lightheavy Robert Woge impressed in knocking out decent Brit Carl Dilks at 2.28 of the third in a scheduled eight-rounder. Woge is easy to hit and comes forward at all times. This makes for a short career and many exciting fights.Supermiddle Tyron Zeuge made his prodebut but had nothing to beat in inept Belorus Yauheni Bohdanouski, who was credited with seven profights but fell down at the very first punch and was stopped at 1.14 of the first.
