Matthew Macklin put up a world class performance Friday night in Manchester flooring Amin Asikainen twice for a first round stoppage to win the vacant EBU middleweight title. For Macklin it´s up and away while Asikainen, well, he and manager / trainer Pekka Maeki will wait a few weeks and think things over before making any decisions but the road back into title contention looks very long and Amin again – same as against Khoren Gevor – looked as if his recuperative power is gone
The Polish mega fight between Tomasz Adamek and Andrew Golota have KSW, the biggest MMA promoter in Poland, as site organizer with promoter in effect being network PolSat. Most fighters – the supposed winners that is – are supplied by BullitKnockout.
WBF heavy champ Francois Botha defends the title against stablemate Willi Fischer October 24 in Dessau, Germany, with SES promoting. Matchmaker of the show is Olaf Schroeder, who manages both fighters and also is WBF coordinator in Europe.
Happy Birthday to former EBU lightweight champion and WBC jr welter ruler, Miguel Velazquez who turned 65 yesterday (Sep 27). There are some other dates around but it is September 27 that is the big day. Velazquez was at his peak around 1970 when he won the EBU crown. Late in his career, 1975, he won the WBC jr welter title with a dq win over Saensak Muangsurin but lost it in a rematch and retired.
Italian Phil Lo Greco, who started his career in Canada but is now with OPI 2000, face Estonian Albert Starikov on Universum´s show in Rostock October 10.
IBF Youth jr middle ruler Dominik Britsch, 15-0, defends the title October 17 in Berlin on the undercard to Abraham vs Taylor. Britsch is in against undefeated Italian Adriano Cardarello, 9-0.
Jr welters JoJo Dan and Ajose Olusegun square off in a WBC eliminator October 9 in Bucharest. The undercard is made up of local fighters.
Belorus heavyweight Alexander Ustinov and trainer Wladimir Zadrian were unable to get visas in time and Ustinov´s fight against Cedric Boswell on the undercard to Klitschko vs Arreola was cancelled.
