WBC female jr light champ Frida Wallberg defends the title tomorrow (Friday April 27) in Linkoeping, Sweden, against American challenger Amanda Serrano. The fight is scheduled for ten-two minute rounds, which is the standard distance for female title fights – but in Sweden it´s a special distance and one that require an exception of the rules from the Martial Arts Delegation (MAD), which regulates all martial arts including boxing based on the Martial Arts Law.
When professional boxing in Sweden returned in 2007 MAD ruled that 12 minutes was the max distance where “acceptable safety for the participants” could be guaranteed.
The Swedish Federation then tried to get special permission for a fight over 8×2 and got it, next was 6×3 and that worked out fine, then they tried for 10×2 and that was approved – and Wallberg vs Serrano is the second fight over that distance.
The promoters for this show and the Federation then tried to move a step further and applied for the welterweight contest between Patrick Bogere and Semjons Moroseks to be scheduled for eight three minute rounds – that was turned down by MAD. It was then tried to get the fight over 10×2 but that was turned down too. Bogere vs Moroseks will now go ahead over 6×3.
Also on the undercard to Wallberg vs Serrano is supermiddle Naim Terbunja, who will make his prodebut against Vladimir Spasojevic. Naim won eight Swedish championships as an amateur and also the New York Golden Gloves and while over here he signed with Al Haymon. However, for reasons unknown Terbunja never got his visa and as a result he was kept waiting but will now finally make his debut – close to two years after signing the contract.
Back after a lenghty layoff is welter Benjamin Kalinovic, who turned pro in 2004 but got into a contractual dispute with an American promoter, returned home and tried to continue his career but dropped out after continued problems to get fights. Kalinovic face Hassan Ssaku.
