Over the weekend and yesterday every media seemed to have their hint on what´s is next for Mikkel Kessler following his four knockout win over Allan Green.
Ringside in Parken well past midnight Saturday night it wasn´t like that though. The organisation around the show was a bit chaotic and when the mainbout went on I had one cameraman and three officials from the Danish Federation blocking my view to the ring, which led to that I missed the first round knockdown of Kessler and thought it had been ruled a slip.
As the fight was over I closed the computer, packed my bag and went to check the mastercard while fans where where looking to get a closer view of the Viking Warrior with security trying to stop them from entering the ring. As it was I got the scoring – 28-28 twice and 29-28 for Kessler with two officials scoring the first 10-8 for Green and the third 10-9.
I found myself locked between security, VIP:s, fans and security. There was another one in the same situation and that was promoter Kalle Sauerland. We were simply stuck as Kessler having left the ring was interviewed by TV. So I asked Kalle what is next Mikkel: -You know, it´s not really up to us, said Sauerland. -It depends on the outcome of a lot of upcoming fights and also what American TV station says.
After awhile the security understood they blocked the way for the promoter himself while I was stuck a little while longer.
Now, back to Kessler it should be added to the mix that the Dane numerous times have stated that he only wants to fight twice a year. In this case it´s likely he would like to back in action late fall and not before. Add to that his history of injuries have led to that a number of planned dates have cancelled or postponed which have made Mikkel risky business for a major fight. Furthermore, Kessler´s low weight for the Green fight – 169 lbs – indicates that his future is at supermiddle and not lightheavy.
All in all my conclusion is that Kessler will face the winner of Brian Magee vs Karoly Balzsay, a fight that will go in July – if the winner is Magee. Should the winner be Balzsay I believe Kessler will face tba to re-establish him further on the scene while Karoly, well known in Germany but not in Denmark, will be moved in towards a fight against the winner of Robert Stieglitz vs Arthur Abraham – if it is Abraham that is.
